Footbath Mats: 5 Common Mistakes

The COVID epidemic brought with it an unprecedented awareness of contamination control.

Historically footbath mats were used predominately by the agricultural and food processing industries to protect against food borne contaminates such as ecoli. Such industries have stringent guidelines on the proper use of footbath mats for maximum effectiveness.

As shoe sanitizing mats become more popular, more questions arise about proper use. It seems easy enough, you place your mat, pour in a sanitizing solution, walk through and you’re all sanitized! While this is ideal, there are many other factors that come into play with shoe sanitizing mats.

Important Factors:

The right material!

Not all rubber compounds are created equal. Cheap rubber mats will cost you more in the long term. These mats have more filler than actual rubber. Common fillers are used by manufacturers to cut costs. If you have purchased an ill-made sanitizing mat with cheap rubber and extra fillers; your mat may quickly deteriorate before it’s time. The solution itself may be breaking down the mat. If your solution is too strong, this can erode even the best made mats.

Solution!

The dilution of bleach to water is the most important factor when using a sanitizing mat. Per CDC recommendations, for a 500ppm- there needs to be a 1:100 dilution of household bleach. This ensures that no viruses or bacteria can enter your area!

Well what can we do to fix this?
