Why Colors?

In manufacturing facilities, color coding has become huge! Much of this is based on the popularity of 5S Lean Manufacturing practices. This is a five step process to reduce waste, and improve quality, productivity and safety by establishing an organized and clean workplace. It sounds simple, but 5S is a powerful tool that brings significant results and requires a relatively low investment.

The fourth step in the 5S process is called Standardize. It involves putting into place practices, procedures and tools that will make it easier to sustain the benefits that have been achieved through 5S. A key component is the use of a color coding system.

Color coding is used because it clearly communicates organizational information faster than any other method. Color coding makes it easier to identify work areas, equipment and material. In fact, a standard color coding system improves efficiency and helps eliminate waste.
